FMCSA tightens ELD vetting and updates carrier registration portal
The agency has blocked hundreds of new device applications since early 2025 and removed about one hundred existing ones. The updated registration system went live in May 2026.
Electronic logging device vendors now face tighter federal scrutiny, and carriers must file paperwork through a new online system to block fraud. Agency leaders shared these updates at a recent industry meeting. Officials are ending the old approval method that let manufacturers verify their own equipment.
The agency has already acted against noncompliant vendors. Starting in early 2025, only one or two new vendors gained approval. Hundreds of requests were denied. Roughly one hundred current vendors were pulled from the market. Police and federal agents are investigating some of these cases.
Carrier registration has also changed. A single online platform named Motus took the place of older systems. The site went live in May 2026. Initial technical glitches have been resolved. The updated setup closes security gaps that criminals previously used.
A federal anti-fraud team is coordinating with state prosecutors to target illegal activity. Officials want carriers to report security threats. They also want the industry to submit feedback on upcoming rule changes. Carriers should check that their current device vendor remains approved and submit all paperwork through the updated site.
