FMCSA extends pause on biennial update enforcement due to system issues

Enforcement of biennial update requirements remains paused while the new registration platform stabilizes. The break applies to all carriers who must file updates through the Motus system.

Carriers whose updates were due on or after June 1 now have additional time to submit their information. The agency will not deactivate USDOT numbers for missed filings during this period.

Standard compliance rules normally allow fines up to $10,000 for missed filings. The current break removes that financial risk until officials announce a return to normal enforcement.

The pause will stay in place until further notice. Officials stated they will provide ample warning before requiring updates again.

The platform went live in May and continues to cause technical issues. Several companies reported they could not claim their identification numbers or reach filing screens.

Companies operating only within state lines do not face federal update mandates. The system still lets these operators change mileage, truck counts, and driver totals for state records.
