Federal loan funds Alabama I-10 bridge and hazmat routing changes
The project will remove the current hazardous materials ban on the George Wallace Tunnel and allow direct I-10 routing for hazmat loads. Tolls will not begin until the bridge opens in five years.
A federal loan of up to $2.52 billion will fund a new bridge and road improvements on Interstate 10 in Alabama. Traffic counts show the corridor moves 10,100 trucks daily and 3.68 million annually.
Hazardous materials trucks face a routing update. Drivers currently cannot use the George Wallace Tunnel and must drive around downtown Mobile and residential areas. The new six-lane bridge will provide a direct I-10 route for these loads.
The Alabama Department of Transportation will manage the construction in two phases. The first phase carries an estimated cost of $3.2 billion. The second phase will rebuild one mile of the Bayway and restripe 7.5 miles to add a third lane in each direction.
Toll collection will not start until the structure opens in five years. The improvements aim to reduce traffic congestion and expand freight access to the Port of Mobile.
