Seizure disorder exemptions granted to 14 commercial drivers

Medical exemptions have been granted to 14 commercial drivers with a history of epilepsy or seizure disorders. These drivers may now operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce.

The exemptions became effective on April 21, 2026. They will expire on April 21, 2028.

Each exempt driver must remain seizure-free and keep a stable medication regimen. Drivers must report any seizure to FMCSA within 24 hours. They must also submit annual reports from their treating physicians and undergo yearly medical examinations by a certified examiner.

Drivers must provide a copy of their annual medical certification to their employer. Self-employed drivers must keep it in their own files. Any crashes, citations, or convictions must be reported to FMCSA within seven days. Drivers must also submit annual certified driving records and carry a copy of the exemption while driving.

These exemptions override any conflicting state laws during the two-year period. The decision applies only to the 14 named applicants and does not change the general rule that prohibits drivers with established epilepsy from operating commercial vehicles.
