Hearing exemptions renewed for 12 interstate truck drivers

Hearing exemptions for 12 interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers have been renewed. The exemptions allow hard of hearing and deaf drivers to continue operating trucks in interstate commerce.

The renewals took effect on March 4, 2026. They will expire on March 4, 2028.

Drivers holding these exemptions must follow specific conditions. They must report any crashes or traffic citations to FMCSA within 7 days. They must also submit certified driving records to the agency every year.

These drivers may not operate motorcoaches or buses that carry passengers. They must carry a copy of the exemption while driving. They must also pass all standard commercial driver license testing requirements.

FMCSA will cancel an exemption if a driver breaks the rules or if safety drops below required levels. The agency reviewed driving records and found all 12 applicants have safe driving histories.
