FMCSA Revokes 15 ELDs; Carriers Have 60 Days to Switch
Motor carriers and drivers using the affected devices must install compliant replacements by September 8 or October 6, 2026. Failure to switch will trigger duty status violations and out-of-service orders.
Fifteen electronic logging devices have been removed from the federal approved list. Motor carriers and drivers currently using these systems must install compliant replacements within sixty days.
Ten devices were removed on July 9, 2026. Carriers using those units must switch by September 8, 2026. Five additional devices were removed on August 6, 2026. Those users have until October 6, 2026 to upgrade.
Continued use after the deadlines violates federal duty status recording rules. Inspectors will place drivers out of service under Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance criteria.
The agency removed the devices because they failed to meet minimum technical standards. Providers can request reinstatement if they fix all deficiencies, but the agency notes this rarely happens. Carriers should switch immediately to avoid compliance problems.
