EPA emission rules delay Class 8 truck orders

Fleets are waiting for clarity on 2027 engine standards before buying new heavy-duty trucks. Medium-duty orders continue to rise.

New heavy-duty truck orders fell sharply in September. The total reached 18,700 units, which is a 9.5 percent drop from the same month last year.

ACT Research points to unclear EPA rules on nitrogen oxide emissions as the main cause. The agency is preparing a new engine standard for 2027.

Trucking companies want to replace older vehicles and prepare for higher costs. They are holding off on purchases until the new emission requirements are clear.

Medium-duty truck sales show a different trend. Orders for classes five through seven jumped 27 percent to 20,200 units in September.

Monthly orders for medium-duty trucks have averaged 19,500 units in 2026. This level sits just above the long-term industry average.

ACT Research will release the final September order numbers later this month.
