USDOT awards $200 million for new truck parking spaces
The funding targets twelve states to build or upgrade rest areas and commercial parking zones. Drivers operating on affected routes will see expanded capacity in the coming years.
A new federal investment of $200 million will fund truck parking upgrades across twelve states. The money comes from a competitive grant program for major freight and highway projects.
Iowa receives $24.5 million to update six rest areas on Interstate 80. Wisconsin gets $15 million to add 106 spaces on Interstate 41. Georgia will use $11.95 million to create nearly 300 spots near the Port of Savannah.
Smaller grants go to Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and Tennessee. The projects aim to reduce the time drivers spend searching for safe places to stop.
Industry groups note that parking shortages cost drivers about 56 minutes each day and roughly $5,600 per year. The lack of available spaces ranks as the fourth biggest problem in recent driver surveys.
Lawmakers have already moved a separate $200 million parking expansion measure for the next fiscal year. A bipartisan group also suggested giving states more freedom to fund local parking projects without new federal money.
