Speeding and seat belt violations lead CVSA campaign citations
Commercial drivers received nearly 2,000 tickets during the July safety week. Phone use and railroad crossing stops also drew enforcement attention across North America.
Results from the July 12 to 18 roadway safety campaign show officers stopped 8,000 drivers across 36 states, seven Canadian provinces and Mexico. Commercial motor vehicle operators received 3,409 warnings and 1,956 citations.
Speeding violations accounted for 17 percent of all tickets given to commercial operators. Failing to wear a seat belt made up 13 percent of the citations. Texting or using a handheld device while driving caused 7 percent of the tickets.
Officers also cited commercial drivers for drug or alcohol impairment, reckless driving, failing to stop at railroad crossings, and using radar or laser detectors. Each of those violations represented 1 percent of the total citations.
More than 2,880 driver contacts resulted in no ticket or warning. Officers used those stops to discuss safe driving practices directly with the operators.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance released the campaign results on October 6. The group stated that unsafe driving behaviors remain a leading cause of crashes and that seat belts are critical for crash survival.
