Oregon simplifies weight/mile tax and drops suspension fee
Carriers operating in the state must update vehicle weights during a spring 2027 window. The new rules take effect in July 2027 and remove a five dollar penalty charge.
Oregon is updating its weight and mile tax system for commercial motor carriers. The state will cut the number of tax rates from eighty five down to ten.
The updated system starts in July 2027. Carriers will calculate taxes using the registered weight of each truck. This removes the need to track separate weights based on vehicle configuration or load.
The state is also canceling a five dollar suspension charge. Officials say the adjustments will lower the administrative burden for both the department and the trucking industry.
Companies must prepare before the new year begins. A required amendment window opens in spring 2027. Carriers will use that time to correct the weights listed for their registered vehicles. Exact dates will be shared later.
Further adjustments are scheduled for July 2029. Oregon will fully join the International Fuel Tax Agreement at that time. The state will then collect taxes from every carrier using its highways instead of only local operators.
