Eight corridors on four interstates are affected. New signs are going up this fall; until then, the current posted limits still apply.

On October 21, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced that speed limits on eight rural interstate corridors will be raised to 75 miles per hour. The changes span four interstate highways.

The authority for the change comes from SB1408, a bill signed by Governor Mike Kehoe in July. That law gave the state DOT the power to set rural interstate and freeway speed limits at 75 mph.

MoDOT said it reviewed each candidate stretch before making the selection. Factors in that review included traffic volumes, truck traffic, crash records, terrain, road design, and the speed limits already posted in bordering states near the state line.

Signage in the affected areas is being updated this fall. Until the new signs are posted, drivers must continue to follow the speed limits currently in place on those roads.

MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger stressed that 75 mph is a ceiling, not a target. "The highways across our state were not built for 80+ mph traffic," he said. He urged drivers to wear their seatbelts, stay focused, avoid alcohol, and respect the posted limit.
