FMCSA Vows Crackdown On ELD Fraud Across The Trucking Industry
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is promising tougher enforcement against fraudulent Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) after investigators witnessed firsthand how drivers can manipulate their hours of service.
In a recent demonstration in Illinois, a truck driver showed how a phone call to an ELD provider could reset his driving hours in approximately 10 minutes. The incident was recorded with Illinois State Police and FMCSA investigators present.
FMCSA says it has already removed more than 95 non-compliant ELDs from its federal registry since January 2025. Another 552 applications were blocked through enhanced screening measures.
The agency says deliberately manipulating hours-of-service records is a crime that puts lives at risk and warns that violators will be held fully accountable.
ELD tampering is also now a separate out-of-service violation under CVSA criteria.
The crackdown could have major consequences for drivers and carriers caught using fraudulent logging devices.
