FMCSA is renewing the information collection for companies that hold hazardous materials safety permits. The collection covers the communications plans and shipment tracking records those companies must keep.
It applies to motor carriers subject to the hazardous materials safety permit requirements in 49 CFR part 385, subpart E. FMCSA estimates 1,142 respondents.
The collection requires a communications plan that allows periodic tracking of the shipment. The record must include the time of the call and the location of the shipment.
The record may be kept by the driver, for example in the logbook, or by the company. It must be kept physically or electronically for at least 6 months at the company's principal place of business or be readily available to employees there.
The communication between the carrier and the driver must take place at least two times per day. FMCSA estimates 5 minutes to maintain a daily communication record for each driver.
The current collection expires on November 30, 2026. Comments on the renewal are due by December 2, 2026. The docket number is FMCSA-2026-0991.
