A trucking equipment company has asked federal regulators to allow camera monitor systems as a replacement for standard rear-vision mirrors. The request targets the rule that requires two side mirrors on commercial trucks and buses.
Carriers and drivers may submit comments on the proposal by August 31, 2026. The request asks for a five-year exemption from 49 CFR 393.80(a). The docket number for this notice is FMCSA-2026-0859.
The applicant states the camera system provides a wider field of view and better performance in low light. It includes alerts for pedestrians and obstacles to help drivers during lane changes and turns.
The agency will review the application, safety data, and public feedback before making a final decision. A future notice will state whether the exemption is granted or denied.
