DOT targets illegal CDLs and English proficiency rules

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the department will focus on removing unlicensed operators and companies that bypass safety rules. He stated that clearing these operators from highways will improve road safety and allow freight rates to rise for compliant carriers.

The department is coordinating with Homeland Security and Justice officials to stop fraud and lower crash numbers. Officials say protecting the profession requires strict oversight of driver qualifications.

Over the last eighteen months, the department reported removing twenty-eight thousand drivers who did not pass English language tests. It also canceled more than thirty thousand commercial licenses that were issued without proper verification.

Federal agencies are now inspecting driver training programs. Schools that do not follow federal standards face closure. The department says these steps will protect legal operators and improve freight rates.

Industry groups are urging Congress to pass Dalilah’s Law. The measure already cleared the House Transportation Committee. Lawmakers must vote on the full House floor before the election to avoid restarting the legislative process next year.
