The funding covers twelve states and includes loans for Virginia Interstate 81 improvements. Carriers on these routes may see fewer delays as capacity expands.

New federal funding will upgrade highways to reduce traffic delays for commercial drivers. The Department of Transportation announced the plan on October 1.

The investment totals $426 million. It targets projects across twelve states. The money comes from the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects program.

Officials plan to build bypasses and repair aging roads. These upgrades will handle thousands of freight trucks each day. The goal is to strengthen supply chain routes.

A separate funding package supports work in Virginia. The Commonwealth Transportation Board will receive two loans. The loans total up to $89.7 million and come from the Build America Bureau.

The Virginia money covers 325 miles of Interstate 81. This highway carries 43 percent of the state truck traffic. The work will separate commercial vehicles from passenger cars.

Carriers using these corridors will encounter construction zones as crews begin work. The projects aim to clear congestion and add lane space for freight movement.
